Britain stands on the brink of gridlock. But when the Government proposed pay-as-you-drive motoring, the driving public revolted against it, dubbing it the Toll Tax. This week, Dispatches will conduct its own experiment to find out if road pricing is indeed the answer to congestion.
Reporter Jason Barlow takes a road trip around the UK in a Dispatches car, to investigate why there is such opposition to pay-as-you-drive. He hears from drivers who feel they have been penalised by a myriad of parking and speeding regulations. But as reporter Jason gets stuck in one traffic jam too many, his sympathy for the motorist begins to wane.
Some suggest that the key problem behind solving the congestion problem is a lack of political will. In order to solve the congestion problem are the public are going to have to pay? Is our freedom to drive going to have to come at a price?
